When Grandkids Visit

ML_Walking_with_Granddaught
grandparent & babyOver the years our families have moved to various parts of the country, which means when they come to visit it is usually for a week or more. Trying to keep everyone entertained for that length of time can become a chore. We don’t believe in letting any age child just sit in front of the tv or computer. The little ones are usually easy  to keep busy. We take them for walks and find pretty flowers, birds, or rocks; the list is endless.

Doing little things like that will keep them entertained for hours and helps prevent childhood obesity. When they tire of that, there are a vast array of educational toys. Baby Einstein has a great variety of such toys.
Keeping teenagers occupied is another story. They love to go boating on our pontoon on any one of the many lakes here in the Ozarks. Naturally we follow all the boating rules and regulations. After cruising around for a while, we will pull into a quiet cove and let them dive in and swim. There is also a great little swimming hole that they particularly like because there is a tree with a rope they can swing on and drop into the water. This place has been around for many years because a friend of ours used to swim there when he was a kid.
The whole group enjoys going to Branson, Missouri to Silver Dollar City. There is something to entertain everyone from music, rides, crafts, old time ways of making items, glass blowing, lots of food, etc. A whole day can be spent without anyone getting bored.

We truly enjoy being able to spend quality time with all of our families.

Boost Brain Power By Talking To Babies

Research has revealed that talking to babies can boost their brain power.

Months before babies start to speak, words play an important role in their brain development.

baby-mom&dadResearch has shown that new babies who heard words were better able to categorize pictures than those who simply heard tones.

Almost 50 three-month-old boys and girls were shown a series of pictures of fish, accompanied by either words or beeps.

The babies were then shown pictures of a fish and one of a dinosaur side by side and the researchers measured how long they looked at each image.

Looking at the fish longer than the dinosaur demonstrated they had categorized the fish in their minds.

The babies in the word and tone groups saw exactly the same pictures for exactly the same amount of time, but only those in the word group looked at the fish for longer.

For infants as young as three months of age, words exert a special influence that supports the ability to form a category.

These findings offer the earliest evidence to date for a link between words and object categories.

We think that human speech especially infant-directed speech, instills  in young infants a kind of attention to the surrounding objects that promotes categorization.

We feel that over time, this general attentional effect would become more refined, as infants begin to decipher  individual words from fluent speech, to distinguish among individual words and kinds of words, and to map those words to meaning.

The remarkable ability of the baby’s brain doesn’t end there. Previous research has concluded they can communicate remarkably complex thoughts at the age of 12 months

Other research has found that newborn babies cry with regional  accents copied from their mothers.

The discovery suggested that babies eavesdrop on their parents’ conversations while still in the womb and are picking up their accents.

How to child proof your home

Every year nearly 3 million children are killed by or sustain injuries in household accidents. Accidents in the home top the list of causes of childhood fatalities. Many of these accidents can be avoided by properly childproofing every room of your home. With a little time and a few handy safety devices, you can easily prevent a tragedy. It’s important to look at the safety hazards each room presents.

Child proof the bathroom
1.  Turn the thermostat on your water heater down to 120 degrees and place anti-scalding devices on the faucets. These devices take many shapes and forms. Some look like a small box you put over the faucet so children can’t turn it on, but the most reliable anti-scalding devices are those that screw onto faucet and shower heads. The small filtering device automatically shuts off the water when it goes above a preset temperature.

2. Toddlers grab onto many things for balance and can easily fall into the toilet bowl. Once your little guy is ready to begin toilet training, you can remove the locks at your discretion.

3. Secure the under sink cabinets and drawers with safety latches. Companies like Safety 1st make numerous types of latches for different types of drawers and cupboards (see Resources below). You may need to purchase a few different types to completely childproof your bathroom.

Child Proof the Kitchen

1. Keep all toxic chemicals including cleaners, soap, insecticides, shoe polish, and any other poisonous substances out of reach. You should place these things in a high shelf or cabinet that has a secure lock. Sometimes children will climb without the parent ever suspecting a thing.

2. Cook on the back burners of the stove, use burner covers when you’re not cooking and make sure to turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. You may also want to consider purchasing stove knob covers that prevent children from turning the burners on.

3. All sharp objects including glassware, knives and other silverware need to be kept under lock and key.

Childproof the Rest of the House

1. Block the tops of stairwells with baby gates to avoid a nasty spill. Luckily, baby gates are very portable and can be carried from room to room to block access to off-limit spaces or to contain your child to a safe perimeter.

2. Plug unused electrical outlets with outlet covers and make electrical cords as inaccessible as possible. You can purchase child-safe power strips or power strip covers that slide to close unused outlets. Keep any electrical cords or any sharp objects sway from the child’s reach. It only takes seconds for a child to grab hold of a lamp cord and within seconds the heavy lamp could fall on top of the child causing serious injury.

3. Cut the blind cords or use a retrofitting kit to avoid the possibility of strangulation. The Window Covering Safety Council provides free kits to retrofit venetian and other blinds with dangerous cords

4. Check your smoke alarms to make sure they work properly and install additional ones as needed.  Make sure you have a fire extinguisher on hand. The best type to have is a multipurpose ABC extinguisher. They’re a little more expensive, but can put out all classes of fires, including flammable liquid and electrical fires.

5. Construct a locked fence around your pool and cover it when it’s not in use.

6. Childproof upper-story windows by using window guards or netting. Screens can easily give way with the weight of a child pushing against them.

7. Never leave any chairs or stools around the child. The small child could use a chair to climb to an area that may have harmful chemicals, hot water or some sharp object. Never leave the child unattended for a second.

Childproofing your home may be a hassle but it is something that must be done

Establishing healthy eating habits in children

kids getting exercise

Exerciseexcuses-kids

Establishing healthy eating habits in children at a young age is critical: According to statistics, approximately 25 percent of school-age children today are obese, a 20 percent increase since 1990. If your child is struggling with his or her weight, here are 10 strategies you can implement right now to keep the numbers on the scale from creeping up.

1. Watch what your kids drink
Sugary beverages can pack on the pounds, so replace soda and juice drinks with water or flavored seltzers. Even nutritious juices can add up: Most experts recommend only 4 to 6 ounces of 100 percent fruit juice for children under age 6 and only 8 to 12 ounces for older children. Drinking eight glasses of juice or soda, which is not particularly uncommon, can add 1,000 calories to your child’s diet!

2. Think natural
Make fruits, vegetables and lean meats the majority of your child’s diet; pre-packaged and fast foods should be an occasional treat. By packing your child’s lunch at least a couple of times a week rather than handing out cafeteria money, you can help monitor meals and snacks when your child is away from home.

3. Skip super-size portions
Despite what commercials feed them, kids really need kid-sized servings. Even too much of healthy foods can add up to more calories than they need.

4. Healthy eating starts in the grocery store
Avoid tempting, calorie-laden treats by replacing them with nourishing (but tasty) substitutes. Try popcorn or pretzels instead of chips and chocolate. Italian ices or frozen yogurt rather than full-fat ice cream.

5. Don’t ban sweets entirely
Kids who are never allowed an occasional treat often binge when away from their parents’ watchful eyes. Rather than prohibiting them completely, save indulgences such as ice cream sundaes and potato chips for special occasions so your child doesn’t feel deprived.

6. Don’t make your child have to clean their plate

Children pay more attention to their own hunger signals and should be allowed to stop eating when they’re full. If they become hungry later, cut up an apple or unwrap a cheese stick.

7. Incorporate exercise and physical activity into your daily routine
The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recommends that children accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week. Make it fun with a game of soccer in the backyard, walks along a local nature trail
or a family bike-riding expedition.

8. Show love and acceptance toward your child despite his or her weight
Overweight children need support, approval and encouragement from their parents to feel secure and self-confident. Don’t complain about their tight clothes or pot belly. Overweight children are usually painfully aware of their own weight problem without parental comments. In a national survey, 30 percent of students surveyed described themselves as overweight. Focus on issues of health and well-being rather than appearance.

9. Concentrate on not gaining  rather than losing baby-eating apple (1) weight
Realize that an appropriate goal for many overweight children is to maintain their current weight while growing normally in height.

10. Talk to your pediatrician if you have major concerns
Doctors and other health care professionals are the best people to determine whether your child or adolescent’s weight is healthy. These professionals can also help rule out rare medical problems as the cause of unhealthy weight.

Tips To Help Kids Develop Healthy Habits

Eat lots of fruit

Eat lots of fruit

How to Have a Healthy Baby

Instilling healthy habits in your child from birth can be challenging but with perseverance and patience the rewards are endless.

  1. Make a self conscience decision to eat healthy and exercise yourself. Kids love to imitate their parents and siblings.
  2. We should do our best to start our kids with the best food given to mankind, breast milk. Breast milk is a living substance, that can be given throughout the first 6 months exclusively. Formula is not a substitute for breast milk. It is a dead substance.Thereafter, adding additional wholesome foods, with a combination of breastfeeding for as long as the Mother can, up to 2 years. Sounds hard, but it provides the best nutrition for your little one and a lifelong benefits.
  3. Give your children and yourself simple, whole foods. Whole foods are packed with minerals and vitamins, especially veggies. Good eating habits are for a lifetime. Start your babies with healthy foods. Everybody loves to see the baby smile as they give them chocolate or ice cream, but it is unhealthy.

Family and friends should be aware, not to give your children unhealthy food when they are babies. Let them love the veggies first, after comes the good stuff. Sweets should be treats, not normal dining.

  4. When they start eating food, other than milk try to give them what you eat. Mush it up, strain it, they’ll love it. Try to let them eat at the table with you. This establishes eating habits.

Avoid too many in between meal snacks. If you must give them a snack, establish a snack time and give them something healthy.

  5. Avoid letting your children eat sweets and junk food at an early age. Soda, chips, chocolates or sweets should not be given to children under the age of 1 year. Habits form early in life. After they are a little older, it is fine to let them have these treats, but not everyday and in small portions.

Don’t let your kids take chocolates and candy from the shelves, teach them to ask you. Once this habit is formed they will bring everything to the checkout.

  6. Try to exercise with your kids and avoid confining them to one place. Especially avoid using the TV as a babysitter. I realize sometimes this may be a help, but you are setting your child up to be a coach potato. Kids need and want to move. Small children can sometimes be challenging, but you can find a way.

  7. Get them to sit on your feet for sit ups or give them a piggy back ride. Improvise.

Tips & Warnings
  • Being a parent is truly amazing.
  • Enjoy and develop your relationship with your little ones now, later is often too late.
  • A good relationship with your baby now will form a bridge during the teenage years.
  • Get advice from a doctor about exercise and breastfeeding.
  • Doctors often push formula. Breastfeeding is not profitable, formula is.
  • Educational toys are also a great way to help them develop their mental capacity.
  • If parents were to receive a report card for keeping their children healthy, many would get failing grades. Currently, nearly one third of kids between the ages of 2 and 19 are over weight or obese.
  • Carrying extra weight is hard on a child’s body and mind. It raises the risk of heart disease, diabetes, excess fat in the liver and orthopedic problems. There is also the psychological effect. Kids want to fit in and need their peers’ acceptance.
  • Here are 4 ways to help improve your report card:
  • 1. Clean up your own act. Children learn what they live and you are the teacher. A family that eats healthy foods and exercises together can grow old and be healthy together.
  • 2. Change how you cook. Emphasize fruits and vegetables, lean meats and low fat dairy products.
  • 3. Avoid “portion distortion.” It’s not only what your kids eat but how much they eat that really counts. Don’t push extra helpings. teach them to eat until they are satisfied, not uncomfortably full.
  • 4. Limit sedentary downtime. Our bodies are made for movement. Play catch, take a walk or go for a swim. The options are limitless.

Baby Products May Contain Harmful Chemicals

There is growing concern about the potential health implications of the chemicals that leach from some plastics, and especially their possible effects on babies. You may have pd_bottle_070806_msseen headlines raising concerns about the soft vinyl teethers and toys that infants sometimes suck or chew. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has, as a precaution, recommended that parents dispose of any such items they own.  We think the agency’s advice is sound.

But soft vinyl isn’t the only plastic used in baby products that may contain chemicals that have caused harm to lab animals. We also found that one such chemical leached into simulated infant formula when we heated it in one type of clear plastic baby bottle.

Parents whose infants use plastic bottles and teethers shouldn’t panic. It isn’t yet known what risk, if any, can cause harm to babies. However, until more is known about their effects, it makes sense to limit exposure to them. That’s especially wise when it comes to infants, who could be at highest risk.

What precautionary steps should be taken.

Dispose of: All teethers and heavily mouthed toys made of soft plastic.

Replace with: New items that manufacturers confirm are made from plastics that don’t contain phthalates. Call the toll-free numbers usually found on packaging.

Dispose of: All clear, shiny plastic baby bottles, unless the manufacturer tells you they’re not made of polycarbonate.

Replace with: Bottles made of glass or an opaque, less-shiny plastic (the plastic bottles are often colored).

Many parents are becoming more aware of such problems and are searching out organic products for their children and themselves.

What happened to baby Gabriel?

A Scottsdale Arizona couple, Jack and Terri Smith, are now persons of interest in the investigation into the disappearance of missing 8 month old baby Gabriel Johnson. He was last seen in late December in San Antonio with his mother,  Elizabeth Johnson. She made a statement that she gave the boy away but she also sent a text message to her ex-boyfriend telling him she had killed Gabriel.
The Smiths are co-operating fully with the police and they say they have nothing to hide. They have said they met and befriended Johnson during a long layover at an airport.
Gabriels father, Logan McQueary, has stated that Johnson has wanted him to let her put the baby up for adoption, but that he refused. She has also wanted him to give up his parental rights to which he refused also.
Police have indicated that they think the baby is still alive.
What kind of a mother is she anyway? People like her don’t deserve to have children.

Do you know how to properly bathe your baby?

3 babies in a tubAre you a new mother? If so, here are a few tips to help you  make bathing an enjoyable experience for both you and your baby. Most Babybathbabies love baths, but sometimes it can be a rather scarey experience for a new baby and a new mom too.
1 – Stay at arms length and keep your eyes on the baby constantly. An unattended baby can drown in less than an inch of water, within a few seconds. Collect all the things you will need to bathe your baby  in advance, like towels toiletries, clean clothing, etc.
2 – The baby should be bathed in a warm room and the water temperature should be between 100-120 degrees Fahrenheit. Always test the temperature of the water  on your wrist before placing baby into the water. Never put a baby  into the tub while the water is running. Fill the tub or sink with water not more than 5 inches deep.  For older babies it shouldn’t be filled no more than their waist deep.
3 – Place a towel in the bottom of the tub to avoid slipping and slowly ease the baby gently into the water. If your baby is a new born, give extra support by holding the baby firmly from the back and support the head and neck. Start washing the baby’s face gently with a soft cloth. Then wash baby’s hair with baby shampoo. Use baby bath products that are especially designed for babies.
4 – After washing, rinsing and drying, wrap baby immediately in a towel or blanket while getting the layette ready to put on. Then wrap in a blanket again and take time out for cuddle time.
5 – Enjoy bathing your baby! Sing or talk to them while bathing so baby will feel comfortable and enjoy this ritual. It helps develop a great bonding and your baby will always enjoy bathing.

Choosing The Right Baby Monitor

Baby monitors are devices that make a new parent’s job easier. They allow you to go outside, close the door, and still hear your baby if they wake up from a nap. In fact, some baby monitors even allow you to see your baby. With so many baby monitors on the market, choosing one can get confusing. Here are 5 tips on how to take the confusion out of shopping for baby monitors.

1. Check your cordless home telephone to see how many GHz it is.  2.4 GHz is fairly common, so you should stay away from that frequency or you may end up with a lot of static on the monitor.

2. Consider buying a digital baby monitor instead of an analog monitor because if someone in the neighborhood has a similar monitor, they will be able to hear what goes on in your home. A digital system won’t allow that to happen.

3. You may want to purchase a monitor with lights and sound, but they cost more money. These monitors allow you to see what’s happening when your baby makes a noise. The louder the sound the more light you get. You can turn down the sound and rely only on the lights if you want things quiet.

4. Determine if you have any special need for a video baby monitor.People who may want to consider a video monitor are those with children who share a room, have home security issues or those whose newborn knows how to roll over.

5. Purchase a  SIDS baby monitor if your child has an increased risk for SIDS. Your child’s doctor will let you know if your baby is at an elevated risk. These baby monitors can detect when your baby stops moving for a specific amount of time. Then an alarm sounds. There is no need for one of these monitors if your baby is a typical newborn babysleeping baby #2.

Warning. Although it may be tempting to purchase the cheapest monitor in the store, beware. The most common complaint about baby monitors is static.
